How speech and clap counting work
Updated 7 November 2026 · By the Mantra Chanting developer · iOS 1.6
Screen Tap, Mantra Focus and Clap / Peak are different ways to count in the iPhone app. Choose a mode based on your surroundings and permissions.
Screen Tap: direct manual counting
Choose Screen Tap, set your goal and start practice. Tap once per repetition. This mode does not need microphone or speech access.
Mantra Focus: speech matching
Set your mantra text, choose Mantra Focus and allow microphone and speech recognition access when requested. The app uses Apple speech recognition and compares recognized text with your chosen mantra. It does not identify every chant or language reliably.
Recognition availability depends on your device, language, pronunciation and the Apple service. It may use Apple services rather than stay entirely on the device; internet access may be needed. Permission does not guarantee accurate counting.
Clap / Peak: sound peaks, not words
Choose Clap / Peak and grant microphone access. A sound peak can increment the counter. Background music, taps on the device and other loud sounds can produce unwanted counts. This mode does not transcribe or confirm mantra repetitions.
Before relying on hands-free counts
- Try a few known repetitions or isolated claps in a quiet place.
- Compare the displayed count with your own count.
- Keep playback volume low or turn background sounds off if they interfere.
- Return to Screen Tap if counts are missed or added unexpectedly.
For permission questions, review the app permissions in iPhone Settings or read the privacy policy.
